    Ovulation Basics

So you want to get pregnant and want to know the best time to get pregnant. It’s actually a little more complicated than you think. For some women getting pregnant may be somewhat impossible yet to others it seems their mate just looks at them and they give birth nine months later. It all depends on your body, heredity, and your ability to know that you’re ovulating. Ovulation is when the female’s egg is released from the ovary. It is the only time a woman it fertile during her cycle.

Women are born with their eggs in their ovaries. The eggs are no good until they mature which happens every month. Once the egg reaches a particular size it’s then released from the ovary over to the fallopian tube then moves toward the uterus. The ovaries are unpredictable as far as which one will release the egg each month. Once the egg is released a woman has a time from 1-2 days before ovulation occurs to about 24 hours afterward. Sperm lives for about 2-3 days in the vagina but the egg only lasts about 24hrs once released from the ovary. That is the only time span an egg has to become fertilized. It’s pretty amazing how precise everything has to be in order to get pregnant yet some women do it without planning or accidentally.

For women that have a regulated cycle it is easier for them to know when they are ovulating just by counting. For those that are irregular will find it almost impossible to know just by counting. There are a few signs in a woman’s body that lets you know that she is ovulating. Count back 12-16 days from your last period. This will give you an idea when you should be ovulating. For those on a 28 day cycle then the 14th day is when she is ovulating.

A change in cervical mucus is another way of telling if a woman is ovulating. If it looks clear, thin and slippery kind of like egg whites then it is likely that the woman is in ovulation. The mucus changes so that it allows sperm to make it through. Another way to know is by the sudden rise in body temperature. You won’t feel the change but can see the difference if you measure it using a BBT thermometer. The temp rises anywhere from 0.4-1.0 degrees. If you notice your temperature increasing, you probably have a 12-24 hour window. I say just keep trying as much as you can before during and after. Some women can tell they’re ovulating by discomfort in their abdomen. It can be a mild ache to sudden pains. They can sometimes tell which ovary is at work by listening to these prickly pains. If all fails then see a fertility doctor to make sure you’re compatible with your mate and to make sure everything is working as it should.
